Placards

Required for:
• All vessels 12 metres or more in length overall
• This includes leisure yachts, motorboats, and commercial vessels once they reach 12 m LOA.
• Placards must be displayed in visible areas (galley, mess rooms, bridge, engine room, etc.), showing the garbage discharge rules.

What are placards?
Waterproof signs or posters fixed in key areas of the vessel to remind crew and passengers of the MARPOL Annex V garbage discharge rules.

Garbage Management Plan

Required for:
• All vessel of 100 gross tonnage and above
• Every vessel certified to carry 15 persons or more, regardless of tonnage
• Every fixed or floating platform
• The plan must describe how garbage is collected, stored, processed, and disposed of, and designate the responsible officer.

What is a Garbage Management Plan?
A written document kept onboard that sets out procedures for reducing, handling, segregating, and disposing of garbage safely, in line with MARPOL Annex V.

Garbage Record Book

Required for:
• All vessel of 400 gross tonnage and above
• Every vessel of 100 gross tonnage and above which is certified to carry 15 persons or more
• Every fixed or floating platform
• Every discharge, incineration, or handover of garbage must be logged, signed, and retained for 2 years.

What is a Garbage Record Book?
An official logbook where the Master or officer records all garbage discharges, incinerations, or handovers to port facilities. Entries must be signed and kept onboard for inspection.
