HOW TO CLEAN A POLYETHYLENE BOAT

How to Clean a Polyethylene Boat – August Race Guide

Polyethylene boats are valued for their durability, low maintenance, and impact resistance, making them a popular choice for tenders, workboats, fishing craft, and leisure vessels. However, even the toughest hull material benefits from regular cleaning and protection to maintain its appearance and performance.

Whether you’re new to boating or a seasoned owner, caring for polyethylene requires the right approach and the correct products to avoid damage while ensuring long-lasting results.

Understanding Polyethylene Hulls

Polyethylene is a tough, flexible plastic material that is naturally resistant to impact and many chemicals. Unlike GRP or aluminium, polyethylene doesn’t oxidise or suffer from osmosis, but it can still:

  • Accumulate algae, dirt, and grime

  • Become chalky or dull from UV exposure

  • Develop surface staining over time

Why Cleaning Matters

While polyethylene is low-maintenance, neglect can cause:

  • UV fading which reduces the vibrancy of coloured hulls

  • Build-up of grime and algae that affects aesthetics and can cause extra drag

  • Permanent staining if contaminants are left for extended periods

When and How Often to Clean

  • Seasonal clean & protect – At least twice per year, ideally at the start and end of the boating season.

  • Quick rinse – After every trip, particularly in saltwater.

  • Mid-season touch-ups – If the boat is stored outdoors or moored in the water for long periods.

Polyethylene Boat Cleaning Step-by-Step

  1. Rinse – Use fresh water and a  SWOBBIT® Soft Flagged Brush to remove loose dirt, salt, and debris.

  2. Apply Cleaner – Spray August Race® Poly Clean evenly onto the surface. Allow a short activation time to break down dirt and staining.

  3. Agitate – Gently scrub using a  SWOBBIT® Soft Flagged Brush or microfibre pad, focusing on heavily soiled areas.

  4. Rinse Thoroughly – Wash away cleaner and loosened dirt with fresh water.

  5. Dry – Allow the boat to air dry, or use a clean microfibre cloth for faster results.

  6. Apply UV Protection – Once dry, spray apply August Race® Poly Protect onto the polyethylene surface.

  7. Buff to Finish – Use a soft microfibre cloth to spread and buff the product, leaving a consistent protective finish.

Environmental Tip: Always clean your boat on land in an area where runoff can be filtered and disposed of responsibly.

Products & Tools You’ll Need

  • August Race® Poly Clean – Deep cleaning for polyethylene surfaces.

  • August Race® Poly Protect – UV protection and sealing for polyethylene hulls.

  • SWOBBIT® Professional Cleaning Tools – Soft brushes and pads to avoid scratching.

  • Microfibre Cloths – For application and buffing.

  • Freshwater Supply & Hose – For rinsing.

Cleaning While Afloat

Polyethylene boats can be rinsed down while on the water, but do not apply cleaners directly into the water. Save full cleaning and protection for when the vessel is ashore to prevent harm to the environment.

Special Considerations

  • Coloured Polyethylene – Regular application of Poly Protect will help retain colour vibrancy.

  • Heavy Staining – Multiple applications of Poly Clean may be needed; avoid harsh abrasives.

  • Textured Surfaces – Use a soft brush to reach into grooves and non-slip patterns.
